CHICAGO, IL - Does professional carpet cleaning help with fall allergies? It does not treat them. What it does is take out what settles. Ragweed pollen rides indoors on shoes, jackets, and pets. The timing is not a coincidence. Ragweed in the Chicago area typically peaks from late August through the first frost, according to the Loyola Medicine Allergy Count. Loyola has tracked pollen and mold for the region for more than 20 years.

Most people react by closing the windows. Macius thinks that only handles half of it.

Macius says weekly vacuuming matters. He also says it has limits.

"A vacuum pulls off the top layer. That is real, and I tell everybody to keep doing it," he said. "What it does not reach is what has worked its way down into the base of the fibers. That takes hot water and suction."
