Cibola County Commissioners Support In-Situ Recovery of Uranium Technology

Canada NewsWire

GRANTS, NEW MEXICO, Oct. 6, 2026 /CNW/ -- The Clean Energy Association of New Mexico (CLEAN) today congratulates the Cibola County Board of Commissioners which, through a County resolution, recognized the strategic importance of the Grants Mineral Belt and In-Situ Recovery ("ISR") for uranium extraction. CLEAN also acknowledges the leadership of the Cibola County Board of Commissioners in voting to approve the resolution.

CLEAN President, Janet Lee-Sheriff, stated "Addressing historic legacy issues has always been a key message from CLEAN as we move forward with environmentally-responsible solutions to extract naturally-occurring uranium from contaminated sources. The support of local citizens and their elected officials is critical and CLEAN greatly appreciates the research conducted by Cibola County officials and staff to make an informed decision based on sound information. ISR uranium extraction has the potential to safely remove uranium without tailings or underground workings, while bringing economic benefits to the State, communities and its citizens."

As ISR projects move forward, State and federal regulators oversee a highly regulated process that allows for public comment on all projects. Necessary independent research and analysis is gathered and reviewed by regulatory agencies with public forums convened to ensure citizens are provided with necessary information for good decision-making. Decisions, such as the support of the Cibola County Board of Commissioners are important as they allow for thorough, balanced and complete information to be presented to the regulators and public.

About In-Situ Recovery Technology

In-Situ Recovery ("ISR") was developed in the United States over 50 years ago and is responsible for approximately 60% of all uranium extraction in the world. ISR offers a minimally intrusive, eco-friendly, and economically competitive approach to mineral extraction successfully utilized in Texas, Nebraska, Wyoming as well as numerous locations globally. Unlike traditional mining, ISR utilizes wellfield technology to extract uranium from ISR-amenable, sandstone-hosted deposits, eliminating the need for open pits, underground working and tailings. The nuclear energy industry is the most highly regulated industry in the United States and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has stated that there has never been an incident of the contamination of drinking water from the ISR process.1
