TORONTO, Sept. 17, 2026 /CNW/ -- The Canadian Association of Journalists is proud to announce a new journalism fellowship today for in-depth reporting on local, provincial or territorial issues.

The Geoffrey Stevens Fellowship for Political Reporting will offer one journalist or small team $3,500 to assist the production of a significant project focused on a region that gets little to no coverage, or subject areas that deserve greater scrutiny.

Our application portal is now open for your visionary idea and plan to deliver an excellent work of journalism.

The CAJ is launching this program with the financial support of friends of the late Geoffrey Stevens, whose journalism career spanned political reporter, columnist and senior editor at the Globe and Mail as well as similar roles at Time and Maclean's magazine and in his later years, writing a column for The Record in Waterloo, Ont.

"Our organization is delighted to offer a new way to encourage investigative and enterprising journalism that shines a light on areas that are too often shrouded in darkness," said Brent Jolly, CAJ president.

"Despite a decade of disruption in Canada's media, Geoffrey Stevens believed that the best days of journalism lay ahead. This fellowship will help to bring that to fruition," said John Laschinger, chair of the fundraising committee for the fellowship.

Deadline for applications to the Stevens fellowship is Oct. 15, 2026. The inaugural fellow will be announced in November.
